Its a great place Lucy Gully and is full of history. Lucy Steve is buried in there with her husband of the 65th Regt. There is two big Maori Pa up in there . Been here many times. Walked the Patua track up through the redwoods.
As a former bus and truck driver in Wellington 20 years ago . . . that's a big no-no. Petone foreshore a.m. peak into town. Nasty. Busy horrible stretch of road and plenty of selfish idiots like the driver here. Shouldn't be driving buses. I would've said the same about myself at the time - young and stupid but even then I wouldn't have bothered doing this at a merge when you can't go anywhere anyway. What the bloody hell is the point of this? Totally bonkers. What a pro driver. I know the Flyer would be a shit of a route but still.
IT WOULD BE GREAT IF THERE WAS A PURPOSE FOR RIDING BESIDES HAVING FUN.
Drove this road at 11pm lastnight for an experience... and boy what an experience it was. Pitch black, ALOT of corners so you never know if another vehicle is just around the corner. The road looks like it only supports one vehicle, so turning a corner at the same time as an on coming car would be very dangerous. Then there's the goddamn possums. We counted about 15 all up with at least 6 i had to slow down so as not to run over. Its also very windy and you can easily drive off the cliffs if not careful.

@@TransportNewZealand theres still a lot of trees but forestry has absolutely demolished half of it. Sad to see. A lot of wildlife struggling to find food

I grew up in Upper Hutt. Never once did my dad ever drive us on this road and never once did I drive it myself. Now I can see why my dad wouldn’t consider it.

@@TransportNewZealand To be honest; I can’t help but think that upgrading the Akatarawa hill road with double lanes & cat’s eyes, corner signage, etc would’ve been a lot cheaper than transmission gully. And a lot more useful for the Wairarapa.

This siren does the same as kerikeri kaitaia and most Northland stations with the long sound of the siren

My Grandad & his brother used to live 100m from the Kawakawa Fire Station. Then a few years back my cousin moved into the house & was a volly for Kawakawa FS. Instead of running along the train tracks,he'd drive! I lived in Huntly & Taumarunui,always would get goosebumps hearing the siren going

My brother got his Hilman Superminx over here in the 80's. I've been over it heaps in my old Suzuki 410's (no mods). They deliberately leave it nasty to stop stolen vehicles being taken past there.
The good thing about having a siren is that the whole town knows what's going on and are vigilant for crews turning in.
My town has one and we also have a 5g tower that sounds the alarm aswell
